Folktales From East Java

East Java Province is a province located on the east of the island of Java, bordering the Central Java Province, Madura Province, and Bali Province. Inaugurated on March 4, 1950, based on Law No.2 / 1950 with the capital city of Surabaya and has the slogan “Jer Basuki Mawa Bea”, which means Success Requires Sacrifice. East Java has 29 districts, 9 municipalities, 662 sub-districts, 782 sub-districts, and 7,741 villages.

Raden Inu Kertapati is the crown prince of the kingdom of Jenggala. He has been engaged to Dewi Candra Kirana, the daughter of the kingdom of Kediri. There are two beautiful daughters from Kediri kingdom, namely Dewi Candra Kirana and Dewi Ajeng. But Raden Inu Kertapati really loved Dewi Candra Kirana.

At one point, during the middle of a full moon, after a long walk in a dense forest, Aryo Menak rested under a large tree on the edge of a lake. When sitting, from a distance he saw a light glowing from the direction of the lake. Aryo Menak then walked sneaking closer to the light source. How surprised Aryo Menak was after learning that the light came from seven heavenly nymphs bathing in the lake.

3. The Origin of the Banyuwangi City
Once upon a time, in the ancient east region of East Java, there was a large kingdom. The kingdom is ruled by a fair and wise King. The King has a handsome son named Raden Banterang. Raden Banterang's passion is hunting in the forest.

According to legend, Joko Dolog is a statue that is said to be the incarnation of the body of Prince Jaka Taruna, the son of the Duke of Kediri. According to the story, Jaka Taruna wants to marry Purbawati, daughter of Duke Jayengrana. Adipati Jayengrana is the Duke of Surabaya. But Jaka Taruna lost to fight against Prince Situbondo and Jaka Jumput and eventually turned into a statue.

Once upon a time, in ancient times, there lived a large crocodile named Baya. He has mortal enemies of a large shark named Sura. Almost every day both of them fight. Because both are strong, tough, and agile, no one wins or loses. If both of them are fighting, the waters around it will become big and cloudy. The animals that live around them are disturbed. Other animals try to reconcile both. But Sura & Baya continues to be hostile.

6. Damar Wulan and Menak Jingga
Damar Wulan is a strong and powerful young man. He contributed to helping the ruler of the Majapahit Kingdom, Ratu Ayu Kencana Wungu. Damar Wulan succeeded in defeating Menakjingga, a duke in the Blambangan area who was a strong and powerful man but has a cruel heart also often arbitrary.

7. Cindelaras
This is the story about the son of the King of Jenggala and his Empress, Cindelaras' mother. The Empress received slander by the King's concubine. Then, the Empress was exiled by the King of Jenggala Kingdom, Raden Putra, to the forest while carrying Cindelaras. Cindelaras himself was born in the forest. But finally, Cindelaras was able to prove to the King of Jenggala that his mother was innocent.

8. Gold Conch
Once upon a time, Prabu Kertamarta, the King of the Kingdom of Daha, had two daughters, Galuh Ajeng and Candra Kirana. The eldest, Galuh Ajeng has a beautiful face, but Candra Kirana is much prettier. Candra Kirana, the youngest, has a fiance, a handsome prince, the crown prince of the Kahuripan Kingdom named Raden Inu Kertapati. Secretly, the Eldest, Galuh Ajeng also loved Raden Inu Kertapati. Therefore she was very jealous of Candra Kirana's luck. Galuh Ajeng then had the evil intention of removing her sister from the palace of the Daha Kingdom.

9. Arrogant Crow
Once upon a time, in ancient times, there lived a crow in the wilderness. He lives together with other crows. One day, the crow found a beautiful fall of peacock feathers. Even though it's only a hair loss, the feathers still look beautiful.

10. Golden Oranges
Formerly, enthroned a fair and wise king in a kingdom on the island of Java. The king gets magical whispers from the gods, that in all the kingdom he leads will be overwritten by a disease. The god gave a whisper that the king had to make a contest to all the people to look for a golden orange fruit as a sacrificial repellent.

11. The Origin of Chicken Forest.
Since ancient times, chickens have coexisted with humans. But at one time, there was a family of chickens that decided to leave the human settlement and live in the forest. They are the ancestors of the chicken forest.

12. The Tingan Village People Can Not Marriage With The Kapal Village People
Kyai Tapiogo is a chief of Tingan village. He comes from Sendang Darajat. One day, Kyai Tapiogo performed a charity on earth and invited Kapal village's chief. The chief of the two villages was initially just chatting normally but gradually both of them disputed each other. Finally, the chief of the Kapal village lost the debate.

13. Kyai Bonten and Ki Jalono

14. Irapati and The Crocodile
Once upon a time, there lived a mother named Mbah Irapati who was respected by residents along the Yellow River for possessing supernatural powers. She has a child. Mbah Irapati loved her child very much. One day, Mbah Irapati's son bathed on the banks of the Yellow River. Without realizing it, a hungry crocodile approached. With lightning speed, the crocodile grabbed the child to death.

15. Tanggungan Village People Can't Eat Tageh Fish
During the war of struggle against the Dutch, Sura Alap Alap was given the task of leading Rajekwesi to the east. The war between indigenous fighters against the Dutch took place unequally because of the inadequacy of indigenous forces. Fearing the loss of many lives, Sura Alap Alap then ordered all of his troops, who were residents of the hamlet there too, to leave the hamlet.

16. The Origin of the Word Babah
Javanese people usually call Chinese ethnic as "Babah". According to East Java folklore, the origin of the word Babah comes from the word "Mbabah" which means finding a way. It is said that this tale was made up of by the Chinese ethnic in Indonesia to keep their distance from the Javanese ethnic.

It is said that in ancient times teak trees were small. Not as big as it is now. The size of the teak tree enlarged during the Medang Kamulan kingdom regarding king Medang who buried his child alive because he felt ashamed.

20. Sandhekala
According to East Java folklore, on the evening of dusk, Den Bagus Sandhekala will take a walk. Den Bagus Sandhekala likes to eat tiger heads or thief's heads. Den Bagus Sandhekala also likes to eat the heads of children who like to play outdoors when the dusk arrives. Den Bagus is a nickname for young people who are respected, while the Sandhekala itself means twilight or at dusk.

21. Hi... Hi... I Know
In ancient times there lived a poor grandfather with his young son. His wife has long since died. The grandfather was sad to think of the fate of his young child. He felt that his life would not last long but did not have anything to inherit to his children other than the knowledge that came from his teacher first.

22. Mr. Mendong and Mrs. Mendong
Mr. Mendong's family is very poor. So poor, they often don't have money to buy food. Called Mr. Mendong because his daily work is making mendong mats. Assisted by his wife, they made mats for sale to the city. They have a small child named Sumi. The child's body is thin because of lack of food. Her clothes were tattered. The young man had heard Mr. Kyai advise his daughters, that he wanted to have a son-in-law who memorized the thirty juz Qur'an. If he doesn't memorize the Qur'an, then Pak Kyai will not accept him as a son-in-law.
